(Pre-requisite: Introduction to Theatre Interpreting or Introduction to Performance Interpreting)
When interpreting live performance, it’s not just what you say — it’s how you embody the sound, pace and feeling of the scene. In musical theatre, character and rhythm are central, and interpreters need the tools to bring both to life through their hands, face, and physical presence.
Musicality and Characterisation is an advanced CPD course for experienced BSL/English interpreters looking to extend their performance skills. You’ll explore how to reflect musical rhythm and emotional tone, shift between character roles, and interpret physical and narrative dynamics with precision and flair.
Sessions include a blend of focused theory and performance-based tasks, and you’ll be encouraged to stretch your skills in a safe, collaborative and non-judgemental space.
You will explore:
- Techniques for aligning interpretation with tempo, rhythm and melody
- Tools for creating clear, expressive characterisation through BSL
- Approaches to interpreting musical ensembles and layered scenes
- Strategies for preparation, rehearsal, and collaboration with creative teams
All participants will receive:
- Detailed, individual feedback to support personal development
- A full course pack with guidance and learning summaries
- Help with recording and structuring CPD for professional use
- Access to a network of interpreters to continue learning and sharing practice
- Opportunities to build supportive professional relationships
- A CPD certificate to submit to awarding bodies
- The opportunity to claim 5–10 hours of additional CPD through reflective and related tasks
Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for BSL/English interpreters interested in expanding their skills in live performance interpreting, particularly in comedy and pantomime. No prior experience in these genres is required, but a willingness to engage in practical exercises and live feedback is essential.
