Comedy is one of the most nuanced and demanding genres to interpret. It requires a sharp understanding of linguistic rhythm, audience response, and cultural references — all while maintaining presence and comic timing.
Seeing Beyond the Punchline is an engaging, CPD-accredited course designed to equip BSL/English interpreters with the foundational tools to begin interpreting comedy with confidence. You will explore a variety of comedic forms including stand-up, sketch, satire and situational comedy, with a focus on maintaining the spirit, humour and timing of the source content.
Sessions offer a balance of theory and practical application, and you’ll be supported to step outside your comfort zone in a safe, encouraging environment that promotes exploration and growth.
You will gain:
- A deeper understanding of what makes humour effective and how it translates into BSL
- Strategies for managing comedic timing and audience interaction
- Techniques for interpreting a range of comedic styles
- Constructive space to rehearse, perform and refine your approach
All participants will receive:
- Individualised, supportive feedback tailored to your development
- A resource pack and summary of key learning points
- Assistance with recording, structuring and evidencing your CPD
- Access to a network of interpreters for continued peer support
- Opportunities to build new professional connections
- A CPD certificate confirming your attendance and learning for submission to awarding bodies
- The opportunity to claim an additional 5–10 hours of off-course CPD activity
