Years of experience, passionate about inclusion

Sharon is the Deaf Culture Specialist, Lead Tutor & Trainee BSL Translator at The Inclusivity Group, working across the group to support access and inclusion.

She is also a qualified British Sign Language teacher, teaching BSL Levels 1, 2 and 3, along with deaf and Disability awareness training courses.

She has almost 30 years of experience working with deaf and disabled people and previously worked with Local Authority for many years, where she worked directly with young deaf people and deaf adults to improve their opportunities in life.

This course has been designed for learners who already have a solid foundation in BSL and are ready to take things further. Whether you’re aiming to become a communication support worker, move towards interpreter training, or simply deepen your understanding of BSL and the deaf community, you’re in the right place.

Over the next 15 weeks, you’ll build on your existing skills through a mix of face-to-face sessions, online learning, and practical assessments. The course is intensive, so it’ll take commitment — but you’ll be supported every step of the way by experienced tutors who know the field inside out.

By the end of the course, you’ll be working confidently with varied BSL in both social and professional contexts, and you’ll be ready to sit the Signature Level 3 assessments:

  • 3ASS1 – Formal Presentation
  • 3ASS2 – Informal Conversation
  • 3ASS3 – Receptive Skills

You’ll also gain a deeper understanding of deaf culture, communication norms, and the role of BSL in everyday life.

Study tips

Before you begin, ask yourself: “What do I want to get out of this course?” Having a clear goal gives your study purpose and helps you stay focused.

Short bursts of focused learning work best. Try studying in 20–30 minute chunks with breaks in between. This keeps your brain fresh and reduces overwhelm.

Use a notebook, a digital doc, or even voice notes. Summarising what you’ve learned in your own words helps it stick.

Don’t just go through a lesson once. Go back, review your notes, and retake quizzes — especially for the trickier bits.

Can you use a concept in real life? Even thinking of examples from your own experience makes the learning more meaningful and memorable.
